Like a Volcano

Pastor Charlie Wilfong – Lead Pastor, cwilfong@pumc.org

They are powerful. Our feelings that is. It can be overwhelming when we are mad, sad, glad, afraid, jealous, or frustrated. Sometimes we ignore strong emotions because they are negative, and we don’t know how to handle them. Sometimes the feelings just come bubbling out of us. We express joy, care for others. . . or perhaps even anger.

Think about a volcano.

Like a volcano, our emotions are often below the surface of what we can see. They just happen like lava. Sometimes they glow and boil underneath. At other times, they can erupt in a powerful expression. Positive and negative emotions often operate the same way.

The Bible tells about people with strong feelings.

I’m grateful that the Bible includes stories of people with strong emotions. We are not alone in feeling them or dealing with them. Moses lets his anger get the better of him. Paul and Silas are sad when they are in jail. The books of Psalms, Lamentations, and others give full expression to the range of feelings we all experience.

The Bible helps us with our emotions.

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus tells about the two houses. One was built on sand, and the other was built on rock. When the storms came, the house built on sand fell down. The house built on the rock stood in the storms. When stormy emotions bubble up in your life, you can build your house on Jesus, the Rock, and weather the storm!

Kids deal with feelings, too.

Just like adults, kids have all the feelings. They get mad, sad, glad, afraid, and all the rest. The stories in the Bible and the Lord Jesus can help kids, too.

This summer, our Vacation Bible School for kids is called “Lava Lava Luau.” It is happening on the mornings of June 20-24, Monday-Friday. You can find the details and how to register in this edition of the Circuit Rider or at pumc.org.

There are biblical ways to express and deal with strong emotions. The kids will learn what the Bible says about anger, sadness, jealousy, and frustration and learn how to respond to others who may be feeling these emotions.

Trust and talk to Jesus.

When your feelings seem too much to handle, you have options. Talk to a friend. You can also pray about it. Be open and honest with Jesus about everything you’re experiencing. In 1 Peter 5:7, we are invited to “Cast all your anxiety on God, because he cares for you.” Trust the love Jesus has for you in each circumstance of your life.

You can also bring your kids or grandchildren to VBS—and even volunteer—to learn some of these helpful Bible lessons.

Go in peace. Go with God. And be well.

Shalom,

Charlie

Help Turn Off Lights

We would like to make you aware that, now that PUMC has an electronic door locking system, there is no longer a need for lock-up crews to lock doors and turn off lights. If you are in a classroom and your meeting is over, please turn off the lights. If you are exiting the building and the hallway seems empty, please turn off the hallway lights. Thank you for helping your church family to be good stewards and save the church some money.

Crop WALK News

A HUGE thank you to all who joined us for the Walk4Ukraine and the generosity of the donors! We had 19 walkers, and Melissa’s sweet dog joined us to raise money for this special walk. We had a great time of camaraderie and exercise and had fun meeting new people. You are all awesome!!! I also want to thank Mick and Linda Linn and the Dairy Queen for donating Dilly Bars to the walkers; even the dog had an ice cream treat! Because of your generosity, we are happy to report that we have raised $4,246 to help the Ukrainian refugees facing so many difficult obstacles. Wow, that’s amazing! Donations are still being accepted until the end of the month. Thank you, again, for your support of this vital ministry!

2022 Youth Confirmands

The meaning of confirmation is closely related to that of baptism. Baptism and confirmation are part of an ongoing, lifelong process of growing in grace. The confirmation program is one piece of this lifelong process of Christian discipleship. The larger picture is Christian formation, being transformed – over time and through the work of God’s Spirit – into the image of Christ.

Confirmation seeks to give the youth a systematic overview of the faith – our identity, history and heritage, practices, and beliefs. This will include our heritage and traditions as a Christian community and as a United Methodist Family and our fundamental beliefs and commitments. In addition, youth will learn what it means to live a Christian life and be involved in the church’s mission in the world.

Lava Lava Luau: Registration is now open!

This year’s Vacation Bible School is just around the corner! The theme this year is Lava Lava Luau.

Emotions are like a force of nature, but with God’s help, we can learn to take control of our emotions before a storm hits! During our fun week at the Lava Lava Luau, we’ll see what God’s word says about anger, sadness, jealousy, and frustration and learn how we can respond to others who may be feeling these emotions as well. In Lava Lava Luau, kids will learn Biblical ways to express and deal with their emotions.

Lava Lava Luau Vacation Bible School will take place June 21 – 24 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. on “Wesley Island” (behind the church). All children, 4 years old – 5th grade are welcome.
To sign your child up for Lava Lava Luau, go to pumc.org/vacation-bible-school.
